Javi Tanke

Javi Tanke is a graphic artist & printmaker based in Bristol, United Kingdom. He has been involved in art since his early teens, studying sculpture in Madrid and working at the Spanish Capital’s prestigious Royal Tapestry Factory. He later lived for over a decade in Hong Kong, working mostly as a designer, art director and strategist. Sceptical, post punk and bold, Serrano was singled out by the New York Times as one of Asia’s eco-design pioneers. He has been a speaker about sustainable industrial design in fashion and interior design shows and developed an extensive career in the design and lifestyle industry.

TRUE LOVE - NOT BINARY

Love is not binary.

Inspired by the principle that love is universal to every single human, and posing an open question rather than delivering a message, The True Love series challenges gender stereotypes and our perceptions of morality, exploring the connections between sex and the collusion of traditional and pop culture.

A limited collection of irreverent screen prints, which question the relationship between gender, identity & pop culture.  A vibrant, refreshing statement about freedom of choice, and a direct visual assault on our moral lens, #nobinary is for aficionados of art that challenges social conventions.

The seed for the collection was planted during javi Tanke’s time living in Hong Kong, one of many modern societies where homosexuality remains taboo, and was completed a decade later in Spike Island, Bristol, UK, where Tanke is a resident.

At a time when gender choices, LGBT rights and sexual identity are making global headlines and reactionaries are pushing back our rights and education, #nobinary explores the sexuality of cultural figures, stereotypes and pop icons. “I want to spark a conversation about the universality of sex and gender, and of love itself to challenge its accepted formats,” says Serrano. “#nobinary is a statement about love as a pure and universal right of which all of us are entitled no matter the format or the content.”
