L.S Lowry

Laurence Stephen Lowry RBA RA (1887 - 1976) was an English Artist. Lowry was best known for his paintings and drawings depicting the industrial districts of North West England in the mid-20th century. He developed a distinctive style of painting and is most famous for his urban landscapes featuring human figures that have been referred to as 'matchstick men'.


Great Ancoats Street

Great Ancoats Street is one of many drawings made an exhibited by Lowry in the Ancoats in the 1930's. This drawing depicts the worn-out working-class Manchester area of Ancoats, a place identified from the 1830's as a notorious slum.
